E-train without overhead contact line

CO2 free with our e-hybride train

There’s a perfect supplement to our modern locomotive armada to stay cost-efficient and environmentally friendly: our e-hybride train.

We are the biggest provider of Austrian traction power and always aim to reduce energy and maintenance costs, as well as noise emission and exhaust gases of our train armada. This is why we generated our new e-hybride train as an alternative to our diesel engine. The e-hybride train is able to move without an overhead contact line (for about one or two hours with 200 kW), because it is powered by a convenient energy storage, which is charged by driving through the overhead contact line.

So far, the hybride technology is deployed only in the automotive industry wherea battery is used by a combustion engine. The possibility of electric charging in the train sector is easy to implement because of a high grade of electricity, but is not used yet.

Innovation through challenge

In order to generate our e-hybride train, we cooporate with bmvit (Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology) to have the possibility to develop innovative solutions in a competition.

Bmvit bears most of the development costs, up to 550,000 EuroProviders are offered contributions in kind , like allocating railway locomotive as prototypes, railway drivers in times of testing, track usage charges, needed electricity, personnel costs for know-how transfer, technical measurement and operational application requirements, as well as the demolition of prototypes by our technical services after finishing all tests.

Announcement and prototypes

This procedure ensures a large spectrum of potential innovative small and large providers to participate in the tender.

The Austrian Research Promotion Agency was authorised to phase out the two-stage procurement by tender in the pre-commercial sector. In the previous year, a jury picked four providers to retain the feasibility study, rechecked and rated by an expert committee and finally two providers commissioned to realise a prototype:

  • TecSol GmbH: „InnoShunt – 100 % electric everywhere; energy storage on an electric shunting locomotive Rh 1063; business without overhead contact line, based on a lithium-iron-phosphate-storage batteryehybridtitel
  • HET GmbH together with Montanuniversity Leoben as well as national aeronautics and the space research centre of the Federal Republic of Germany (DLR): Hybride locomotive based on H2 fuel cell and water electrolysis as range extender predominant for hump use on railway sections with or without overhead contact line.

Testing prototypes

As a last step, the realisation of the  prototype locomotive started. It was tested on the tracks for suitability for a daily use and efficiency at the end of 2016.

To realise the prototype locomotive TecSol, it was given a 1063.039  train for structural alteration works in the maintenance site in Krieglach. After finishing the structural alteration works, the locomotive was showcased at the InnoTrans 2016 fair in Berlin. The audience was enthusiastic.

For HET, the locomotive 1063.038 is intended as prototype. The structural alteration works will start with help from Technical Services in Linz as soon as possible.

Future technologies

After finishing the tests, the prototype locomotives will be dismantled and the collected operational experience will end in terms of pre-commercial-procurement in procurement by tender of refurbishments of the type1063 to the e-hybride locomotive.

Research and development has been left to the industry nearly exclusively, but it has shown that we own fundamental know-how of future technologies. Our modern locomotive armada receives a perfect supplement in terms of a e-hybride locomotive by offering cost efficient and environmental friendly traction power.
