Turkey: motor for european markets

07. 11. 2019

The area of Turkey, which has always been known as the "bridge between the Orient and Occident", is one of the most diverse and oldest countries in the Mediterranean in terms of landscape and history. Europe and Asia are separated by the Bosporus, the Sea of Marmara and the Dardanelles.

From historical, cultural and traditional relationships, Southeastern Europe is developing into an emerging market with great economic growth potential. Turkey is regarded as the motor for many European economic markets.

The railway market in Turkey

The expansion of the road network in Turkey has been given priority over rail transport for decades, but for some years now investments have again been made for the expansion of the railways. The length of the rail network is about 12,000 km and is operated by the state-owned railway company Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Devlet Demiryolları (TCDD). Since the liberalisation of the railway sector in 2017, two more private operators have now entered the rail freight market.
