Becoming a train driver: an interview with Noah Nickisch

12. 03. 2025

Noah Nickisch is completing his first year of train driver training with Rail Cargo Group in Germany. His training in Cologne is preparing him for an exciting job with a lot of responsibility: he will soon be transporting many tonnes of goods to their destination every day. In this interview, Noah tells us about the first few days of his training and why he has found his calling on the railways.

Noah, what made you decide to become a train driver?

I discovered my interest in railways as a child, especially the technical aspects of rail transport. During my school years I was able to make contact with train drivers in model making and railway clubs, who let me take part in their daily work over the years and also recommended the training to me. I was convinced that this was the right career for me.

How did you hear about RCG?

I was able to get a first impression of RCG through the employees' social media channels and the official company account. This is how I got in touch with the people who convinced me to try my luck here. They were also the ones who guided me through the application process and the subsequent medical and psychological examinations.

How did you start your training?

Even before I started my training, I had the opportunity to gain an insight into the day-to-day work of a train driver during a work placement. I also had the opportunity to meet other apprentices and our future trainer at a welcome event, which made my first day in the company much easier.

The week started with a presentation about the company and a tour of the offices. I was also introduced to the different departments and their staff, including their roles within the company. We then went straight to the vocational school, where we also met the teachers and fellow students. In terms of content, we first looked at the basics of railway operations and the most important components of the railway. In addition to the basics, we also studied the legal principles and the various activities involved in railway operations.

What is your conclusion after one year of training?

I am convinced that I made the right decision in choosing to train at RCG. From day one, I felt that I was fulfilling a childhood dream. Even though the training can be very stressful at times, I am positive about the future.
