A job with meaning - apprenticeship at the RCG

15. 12. 2021

The new apprenticeship year at the ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) will commence in September 2022. We have been training logistics agents for over 20 years. The professional world of them could not be more diverse.

When it comes to apprenticeship training, the RCG has assumed a pioneering role: Numerous awards including the "Top Training Company" quality seal as well as a wide range of international accolades speak for the RCG as a trainer. More than 600 RCG apprentices have successfully completed their apprenticeship since the start of training in 2000. Most of them – over 80 % – remain in the service of the RCG, Europe's leading rail logistics company, even after they complete their training.

Multifaceted world of work

The professional world of our logistics agents could not be more diverse. When goods need to go from one place to another, they are the ones who take care of it. They choose the route, the packaging and the means of transport, calculate the price, handle the transport documents and take care of Customs matters. They are the ones who provide customers with optimal service - that is their ambition.

Climate protection and "energy driver's license" as fixed components of training

Initially launched as a pilot program, the energy driver’s license is now a fixed component of apprenticeship training at the RCG. Ecological awareness and sustainable action are lived practice in day-to-day operations – as well as in the training of apprentices. Over 70 of them have already successfully completed the energy driver’s license, which was awarded the Austrian Climate Protection Prize, and received their certificate of completion. Thus, they also acquire important basics for their future jobs in climate-friendly rail logistics.

The seminar program includes practice-oriented knowledge in the areas @home, @work, @leisure:

  • Energy, energy parameters and energy billing
  • Everyday ways to save energy
  • Ecological impact of energy consumption
  • Climate protection and renewable energy sources
  • Energy-saving mobility

Workshop organisers focus on practical basic knowledge with concrete solutions for everyday life. Among other things, apprentices learn how to read an electricity bill, how much a standby operation costs in a year and where they can save energy and cut costs even without a personal "feeling of loss". With the energy driver's license, apprentices are thus already sensitized to an environmentally friendly everyday life during their training.
