Turkey: Gateway Between Europe and Asia

13. 11. 2024

Turkey has always played a key role in international trade. From the ancient Silk Road to modern transport corridors, the country remains a central hub for goods and services to this day. A number of our employees represent RCG in this important market – come and visit us at logitrans in Istanbul!

While Turkey’s railway history began in the second half of the 19th century, rail freight transport has only just gained traction in recent decades. The first railway lines, often built with the support and involvement of European powers, aimed to connect the urban centres of the Ottoman Empire and facilitate trade. Even today, Turkey continues to serve as an important hub between Europe and Asia. Rail freight transport plays a pivotal role in this.

Modernisation and Investments

Turkey’s unique location connects the major markets of Europe and Asia. This benefit is further strengthened by the current expansion of the railway infrastructure. Major projects, like the Marmaray Tunnel in Istanbul, allow freight trains to travel directly from Europe to Asia and vice versa without the need for goods to be transshipped. By the way: RCG is currently the only rail logistics provider to have a permit for semi-trailers to use the Marmaray tunnel, in addition to 45-foot HC containers and swap bodies. In the Greater Istanbul area, this tunnel is used not only for public, national and international transport, but also for freight transport at night when local transport is not in operation, thus enabling uninterrupted freight transport between continents. The benefits are clear: uninterrupted and safe transport, cost savings and shorter transport times are just three of many. Despite the progress made, challenges remain, particularly in terms of infrastructure. The rail network needs to be further modernised and expanded to keep pace with growing demand.
