As Europe's leading rail logistics provider, we practice sustainability every day. In addition to continuously shifting traffic to rail, we are taking it a step further: since the end of 2021, we have been offsetting the emissions from our warehouses in Lenzing and Vienna Freudenau through targeted climate protection projects. The result? Net-zero emissions at two out of three storage sites in Austria.
We measure our greenhouse gas emissions at the Lenzing and Vienna Freudenau sites comprehensively – including all Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 emissions. This means that we take into account not only direct emissions from our vehicle fleet and heating gas (Scope 1), but also indirect emissions from purchased energy such as electricity and district heating (Scope 2). We also look at indirect emissions along our value chain, including emissions from employee commuting, business waste, and office paper (Scope 3).
We offset unavoidable emissions through our partnership with ClimatePartner. With our storage site in Lenzing, we support a wind energy project in Bandirma, Turkey, which promotes renewable energy and contributes to the reduction of fossil fuels. With our Freudenau site in Vienna, we are investing in regional nature conservation in the Karwendel Nature Park, thus contributing to the preservation of native habitats. Since the start of this initiative, we have offset 1,329 tonnes of CO2.
Climate protection is part of our everyday business. We see offsetting emissions as a crucial step in a comprehensive climate protection concept. Our storage sites in Lenzing and Vienna Freudenau are just the beginning – we are continuously working to make other sites climate-friendly as well.
Our efforts with ClimatePartner are certified by independent test centres. Each offset is transparently trackable: an ID number and tracking URL allow all measures to be viewed. In addition, our processes are audited annually by TÜV Austria.
