Rail freight transport through the ages

13. 09. 2023

In 2023, ÖBB will celebrate its 100th anniversary. A remarkable success story in which the RCG has also played a major role. High time, then, for a look back at the eventful history of rail freight transport with the most important innovations and milestones.

100 years and still not a bit quiet! On the occasion of the big ÖBB anniversary, we take a short RCG journey through time and look at the most important milestones in rail freight transport. Please hold on tight, the nostalgic goods train is leaving!

In 1992, ÖBB's rail freight transport gets its very own appearance for the first time. The brand launch of Rail Cargo Austria in Austria and Germany attracts a lot of attention in the media and society.

In 1999, Rail Cargo Austria takes over Express-Interfracht & Speditions Holding. New branches and sales offices enable direct market access in Southern and Eastern Europe and strengthen our market position in Europe.

In 2004 we receive the first international safety certificate. This paves the way for Europe-wide own production.

In 2008, the acquisition of MÁV Cargo and the brand launch of Rail Cargo Hungaria represent another important step towards internationalisation. This orientation becomes particularly clear in 2014 with the unified brand launch of Rail Cargo Group

2018 is the year of TransANT: a revolutionary platform concept for a new standard in the freight transport market. The modular freight wagon innovation is future fit, extremely flexible in construction and use and brings payload advantages of up to four tonnes. In addition, RCG is intensifying its Asian connections with the establishment of the first direct train from Vienna to China, thus opening up new countries and markets.

In 2021, the RCG takes major steps towards the future with its digitalisation offensive. A significant part of this is the digital assistant MIKE, which makes the handling of transports - from transport requests to invoicing - much more efficient and, together with SmartLINK and TransNET, creates even more transparency and makes processes much more customer-centric.

Today, we move around 88 million net tonnes annually and ensure that 1,230 trains reach their destination safely and on time every day. Rail Cargo Group is the sustainable logistical backbone of the European economy - for a Europe worth living in.
