2018 was a year full of highlights. It was a year full of speed – for you and our employees. Today is the time to review our performance.
12 April 2018, 10:00 am, local time Chengdu – the first freight train directly from China to Vienna departs. 15 days later, on 27 April, we were able to receive the train, loaded with 44 containers, at the Vienna South Freight Centre. This was the starting signal for the fourth China connection. This year we already handled more than 400 freight trains between Europe and Asia. We are planning a total of 600 trains for 2019. By participating for the first time with our own stand at the China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai in November, we took another step towards further strengthening our presence in the Far East. But also at the TransRussia in Moscow, the InnoTrans in Berlin and the logitrans in Istanbul we used the big stage to present our Services.
More productivity and efficiency, flexible design and deployment, available in four different lengths, payload capacity of up to four tons – these were our requirements in the development of a completely new wagon concept. The result: TransANT – a wagon that not only sets new standards in rail logistics, but also revolutionises rail freight transport and thus breaks new ground in logistics. This is possible because of the special lightweight construction and the 20 % lighter wagon underframe, which enables up to four tonnes more transport volume per wagon. We are thus bringing even more goods onto the railways in an environmentally friendly way.
With new connections this year we strengthen our network to a total of 36 high-frequency connections. With the TransFER Budapest-Rotterdam, we are significantly shortening transit times between a major port and the Bilk terminal. Furthermore, with the TransFER Vienna-Piadena, Lodz-Istanbul and Linz-Duisburg, we created attractive solutions for transferring goods from road to environmentally friendly rail. Our Rolling Highway connection between Salzburg and Triest-Fernetti was also resumed due to gratifyingly high demand.
With immediate effect, all our train products and train connections – both for conventional wagonload traffic and for intermodal traffic – will be designated under a common product name TransFER. Since we are of the opinion that the common whole is stronger than the sum of the individual parts, we bundle our efficient offer with all our TransFER connections to TransNET. TransNET thus forms our strong, comprehensive and integrated network.
Do you already know our new website in a modern look? This year we launched the new corporate website of Rail Cargo Group, Rail Cargo Hungaria and the Rolling Road. In just three clicks you will find the right contact person, all information about our services, industry offers, our network and the latest news directly on the start page.
The RCG also strengthened its presence in various social media channels. By equipping freight wagons with so-called whisper brakes, we reduce the noise level of freight traffic. By the end of 2021, we will have upgraded over 90 percent of our vehicles with low-noise braking technology or quiet soles.
In cooperation with SBB Cargo and PJ Messtechnik, the RCG is working with the automatic brake test on a semi-automated train preparation system and in-train communication. This pilot project is a milestone in the technological development of rail freight transport. The sensors and electronic components mounted on the wagon will enable an automatic and thus still safe brake test.
This year, numerous apprentices were honoured for their outstanding performance in their vocational training. In addition to the awards such as Stars of Styria, the WK Vorarlberg award or the professional competition in Vienna, our apprentices won several prizes. We are thus not only investing in the training of young colleagues, but above all in our future.
