In the middle of Europe. More than 2.3 million square metres. 75 kilometres of railway network on the site. 62.7 million tonnes of goods handled. And almost 10,000 trains a year. The port of Trieste, which is celebrating its three hundredth anniversary this year, is Italy's strongest port and an important trade and transport hub in the Mediterranean region. But that's not all. Trieste has also recently become another important ECM*-certified maintenance base on the map of ÖBB Technische Services (TS), the ÖBB workshops. Perfect for us. After all, ÖBB Technical Services is our competent partner when it comes to the safe and reliable maintenance and repair of locomotives and freight wagons.
Intelligent maintenance
In Trieste, Rail Cargo Group's intermodal container wagons are serviced quickly and professionally. The work includes repairs and AVV checks. Particularly important: the wagons are thus not only kept running but also ready for use. In order to reduce the downtimes of the wagons and thus increase their operational readiness, all work steps take place during the downtimes, i.e. between loading and unloading the trains. Another plus: work is carried out directly on the port site - the workshop gets its turn.
Started at the end of 2018, more than 250 cars have been processed in Trieste since then. And the successful model is being further expanded: with the maintenance of locomotives in Sopron, Hungary, the starting signal for the maintenance of freight wagons will soon be given in Ostrava. In addition, Technical Services is working intensively at other locations abroad. These cooperations will enable TS-level professional maintenance to be carried out at strategically valuable locations along the most important European transit corridors. And this will not least provide perfect support for the Rail Cargo Group's internationalization strategy.
*) ECM certification: Certification of bodies responsible for the maintenance of freight wagons.
