Intact ecosystems are among the best insurance we have against the climate crisis. The Rolling Road (ROLA) makes a decisive contribution towards protecting our environment.
Trucks cover their mileage while remaining entirely still. Not only does this relieve the strain on transit routes; it also saves truck drivers time and stress while stuck in traffic jams. What does the Rolling Road (ROLA, short for Rollende Landstraße) contribute to the environment? Plenty:
Besides keeping roads free of trucks, the ROLA saves around 14,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year.
In order to absorb or process a single tonne of CO2 from the environment, a beech tree needs to grow for about 80 years. This means trees in a forest measuring approx. 35 hectares would have to grow for 80 years in order to match quantity. How much is one tonne of CO2 actually?
In any case, the potential for further savings remains undiminished. Together with passengers and freight transport customers, ÖBB is saving as many as 3.5 million tonnes of CO2 in rail transport throughout Austria, making us the country’s largest climate protection company.
But the ROLA does not only help the environment; there are other advantages too. It saves on toll costs, fuel and operating kilometres for freight carriers, and a ROLA journey is legally recognised as a rest period.
